ACL Div 2 Maghery v Clann Eireann

Maghery took on Lurgan side Clann Eireann at home on Friday evening past. The opening quarter set the scene for an evenly contested game, Clann Eireann recording a free in the 1st minute and Maghery getting one from play in the 2nd, courtesy of Michael McConville.

The visitors knocked over another free in the 7th minute of play before an excellent Stephen Fox point leveled the score a few minutes later. Seamus Forker pushed the Maghery boys ahead with a great point in the 12th minute and when Eamon Robinson connected with nephew Shea Tennyson a minute later, the latter made no mistake in putting the ball to the back of the Clann Eireann nets.

The Lurgan outfit pulled one back as the game entered into the second quarter, leaving just a goal between the two sides, Clann Eireann 0 – 3, Maghery 1 – 3. Five minutes later and there were two in it as Clann Eireann scored from play, while Maghery were left to rue countless missed opportunities as many scoring chances fell short into the waiting hands of the Lurgan town goalkeeper.

Clann Eireann reduced their deficit to the minimum in the 22nd minute with another fine point from play, and when they converted a free-in in the 24th minute, the teams were back on an even key. Seamus Forker edged Maghery ahead again in the 25th minute with a superb point, and when Maghery registered another 4 minutes later it was to be the last score of the first half.

HALF TIME SCORE MAGHERY 1 – 5 CLANN EIREANN 0 – 6.

Seamus Forker added two points in as many minutes to the Maghery account in the opening stages of this second half, one from a free and one from play. Maghery now lead by four. Undeterred, Clann Eireann set about making things right for themselves and when they found the back of the Maghery net in the third minute, it was game on, again.

A lively Paul Forker fired over in the 5th minute for the MacDermott’s and just after Maghery had a point disallowed in the 10th minute, Eamon Robinson dropped a long ball in and no mistaking it this time, clearly over the bar. Eamon Cusack then got his name on the score sheet, converting from close in, as the game entered the final quarter. Receiving close attention from the Clan Eireann backs, Paul Forker managed to slip through for another point in the 18th minute and Maghery lead by 4. Clan Eireann responded with 2 points in the 20th and 21st minutes before Paul Forker scored 2 more points to restore the loughsider’s 4 point advantage.

The Lurgan side found themselves reduced to 14 men when Jimmy Mc Kee sidelined one of their players for a second yellow. Michael Mc Conville scored Maghery’s 13th point in the 28th minute, just before Clann Eireann scored their second goal, and with the final whistle fast approaching it was all to play for, 2 points separating the side. On the stroke of the 30th minute Eamon Cusack made sure of some league points for Maghery when he sent over from play, leaving the Lurgan visitors needing a goal to tie it. But time was up, and when the game ended the Fox scoreboard at Felix Hamill Park read:

MAGHERY  1 – 14    CLANN EIREANN   2 – 8
