Maghery Narrowly Miss Out On Ulster League Final
28 March 2006
Maghery faced Clonitbret last Sunday in the semi-final of the club Ulster League. The Monaghan men registered a goal in the opening minutes of the game. The home sides’ scores in reply came from Gerard Campbell, Seamus Forker, Conor Mackle and Stefan Forker. Maghery fought hard and gave a spirited performance and managed to be ahead by two at the break. Further points were added in the second half by Stefan Forker, Conor Mackle and Kieran Rafferty but due to a determined performance by Clontibret the sides were all square as the full time whistle sounded. (Maghery 0:09, Clontibret 1:06)
Seamy McConville opened the extra time scoring with a free and it seemed that a place in the final was within our grasp. Clontibret however persevered, registering four points in extra time. Seamus Forker brought the teams level at one stage (0:11, 1:08) and when the Monaghan men pulled in front again was the one to step up with another fine point. Unfortunately this still left the Loughshore men trailing by a point and with time running out Maghery were out of luck and were defeated by that single point. Final score Maghery 0:12, Clontibret 1:10.
This was a great game in which both teams showed much determination and spirit. Clontibret now advance to meet Carrickmore in the club Ulster League Final. Good luck to both teams in what promises to be a great clash.
