Maghery's Men In The Middle
01 September 1993
Refereeing is often one of the most thankless tasks in game of Gaelic Football. Too often verbal abuse, even physical intimidation seem to be an everyday hazard, but obviously that hasn't deterred the three Nugent brothers from Maghery. David the club secretary is always prepared to step into the breach at a moments notice and has already proved he has much to offer in this area.
Older brother Eamon who lives in Clonmore, has already taken charge of two 'B' finals as well as the 1993 championship match between Armagh Harps and Crossmaglen Rangers. Paddy, now living in Clonmore, like Eamon, is now in his third year as a referee and in the 1992 season he took charge of the Grange and Dromintee senior championship game. All three Nugents have distinguished service to the Maghery club at virtually every level especially in minor and 'B' grade, and all are the proud possessors of 'B' Championship medals.
They owe their involvement in refeering to another Maghery man, Rory Robinson, who has almost reached the veteran stage! He has been involved in both Ulster minor and U-21 Championship games and was umpire at two Ulster senior and one minor final. In 1992, Rory refereed the Armagh intermediate football championship final. Laurence Cusack, formerly of Portadown and who once played with Annaghmore, is the latest recruit to Maghery's growing band of referees.
