Charlie Takes Sam Back To His Roots
01 May 1993
Charlie Mulgrew, a member of the history making 1992 Donegal team, who won the All-Ireland final, took a trip back to his native Maghery in May 1993. Not only was he accompanied by his brother Damien, but he also brought along the Sam Maguire Cup. The occasion was organised by Declan Fox and it brought a lot of pleasure to the community, especially when Charlie visited the three local primary schools of Maghery, Clonmore and Annaghmore, where the children were having their first-time look at the Sam Maguire.
Later that evening Charlie participated in coaching with the under-age teams in the Maghery Football Field. Afterwards a reception was held in the Lough Neagh Lodge Hotel, formerly Charlie's homeplace, where Charlie and Damien met with past players and managers. A large crowd saw Charlie being presented with a momentum of the ocaision by club Chairman Kevin Fox and Noel Laverty. In a speech Charlie informed everyone that over the years he never lost contact with the club, and always kept an eye on the results in the Irish News. Lets hope he see's more victorious Maghery teams in the headlines.
