Match report of Maghery's first Championship win over Clan na Gael

Maghery recorded their first ever championship victory over Clan na Gael in a tough, hard-hitting quarter-final tie played at Portadown. The slipppery conditions made it a game riddled with mistakes and misdirected passes.

It was a Joe Forker inspired Maghery attack that hit Clan na Gael for three first half goals leaving the Lurgan side, who had wind advantage in the first period, a mountain to climb.

Ahead 3-3 to 1-2 at the interval Maghery's county man, Martin Toye, signed the Clan's departure with his sides fourth goal three minutes after the resumption.

Minutes later Clan's were reduced to 14 men, corner nack Don McCavigan receiving his marching orders for a bad tackle after having been booked only a matter of seconds earlier.

Three of the six goals came within a four minute period towards the end of the first quarter, Joe Forker scoring twice for Maghery and James French pulling one back for Clans.

There was stalemate for ten minutes before Barry McAreavy reduced the Maghery lead to a goal. However, goals on each side of the interval from Ciaran Robinson and Toye ended the contest.

Clan's had a good spell midway through the second half which produced a goal from substitute Conor Jordan but Maghery's reply, a brace of points from the Robinson brothers, Dixie and Jim, dispelled any threat of a Clan's revivial.
